Read MoreTired of people asking you about your Valentine's Day plans? Lace up your doc martens, grab your spike-studded leather jacket, and pierce your ears with questionable devices this Friday for a night denouncing all love-song mixtapes, restaurant reservations, and boxes of chocolate and celebrating a deeper love. That is, a love for punk rock! We have three excellent local punk bands to accompany your own anti-Valentine's Day tirade.
Besides, Valentine's Day is just a holiday invented by the greeting card industry, or something.

I just started getting into this rather prolific band. If you haven't heard of them, Melvins are a four-piece grunge/sludge act from Washington (no surprise there). They've been jamming since the late 80s and are still releasing new material. They cite Black Flag, Black Sabbath, Swans, and Flipper as influences, but they really have a pretty unique sound that can't really be fully defined. Bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden worshiped them. It's safe to say that Melvins had a strong influence on the whole grunge scene.
For this particular album, Cobain helped produce several tracks and even played some instruments on some of them. This is Melvins supposedly at their most accessible. That being said, it's still pretty strange.

New album by Converge, out today. If you're a fan of heavy and chaotic punk/metal music this is not to be missed. Overall, pretty solid album, a step up from their previous effort "No Heroes", but not quite up to par with their magnum opus, "Jane Doe". Still, check it out.
The whole album is streamable here...

My favorite Black Flag release. This is the only record to feature Chuck Biscuits on drums as well as the tracks "Yes I Know" and "What Can You Believe?" Other than that, you get a handful of alternate versions of tracks from My War and Slip it In. Everything just sounds awesome here--more rawness, more energy, and more aggression. This is the definition of hardcore punk. For Black Flag fans it's an absoulte must have.
What Can You Believe
Yes I Know
So good. You can't really buy this anywhere, but I hear you can download the full album on the internets...

Yet another great, yet somewhat forgotten 80s punk/alternative rock act. Husker Du began as a straight up hardcore punk band similar to that of Black Flag and other SST bands, but differentiated themselves by focusing more on melody, which eventually helped shape alternative college rock. New Day Rising is arguably their best album (but check out all of them if you can, especially Zen Arcade) and showcases the bands transition from blistering punk to upbeat melodic alternative rock. Here's a few tracks to wet your appetite:
New Day Rising
Terms of Psychic Warfare
If you're a fan of the fuzzy guitar and melodic undertones, be sure to buy it!
