On May 2, I ventured down to the Wiltern to catch OK Go, a four part indie rock band with a touch of disco and synth-pop that brought you the music videos for “Here It Goes Again,” featuring a choreographed dance on treadmills, and “This Too Shall Pass,” which employed the use of a Rube Goldberg Machine.  From their reputation as a group that produced these technically impressive music videos, I was expecting a similar quirky and unique spectacle at their show.  OK Go did not disappoint, and delivered what was definitely the most innovative and audience participatory concert that I have ever had the pleasure of attending.  Starting out with projections on a butterfly net surrounding the band, coupled with copious amount of confetti, intricate light shows, and live footage projected on stage from Go Pros attached the each microphone, the band delivered a stunning visual performance.  Also, the group kept the audience laughing with Q&A sessions sporadically placed between songs, where I learned that the treadmills in that iconic music video were set at 2.8 miles per hour, and with an encore where the group dressed in glow in the dark jumpsuits and performed an interpretive dance.

Musically, OK Go absolutely nailed their performance.  While they predominantly delivered the sweet sounds of their most recent album Hungry Ghosts, the band delivered some of their better know hits from previous albums, like “Skyscrapers,” “Get Over It,” and “Here It Goes Again” with an electric, quirky energy that kept the crowd up and dancing and singing along.  Needless to say, this show was truly one for the books, and I would definitely encourage anyone who appreciates killer music with the occasional nerdy joke and dance move inserted within a live performance to see them, maybe at one of the festivals that OK Go will be gracing with the presence and musical styling this summer.
