Show Review: Katchafire

Last Saturday night, I checked out Maoli and Katchafire, two fine reggae bands, at Club Nokia.  Maoli kicked things off with some mellow, island-sunshine vibrations, which makes sense and sounds great coming from this Hawaiian group.  Despite their laid back music, one of Maoli's guitarists was especially energetic, constantly bouncing around stage with an infectious grin on his face.  As an added bonus, Hawaiian singer Irie Love joined Maoli for a few songs, adding her silky vocals to the mix.

Next up was Katchafire, hailing all the way from New Zealand! Their bassist, drummer, and percussionist laid down some smooth, bouncy reggae riddims, so nice that when the guitar skank and horn section came in, you knew every little thing was gonna be alright.  And if anybody had any doubts, they dispelled them quickly with what was definitely the highlight of their show: a rousing rendition of Bob Marley's best known song, "Three Little Birds" (joined on stage by Maoli and Irie Love, of course!). I joined the rest of the audience in singing along with this reggae classic, and it was especially cool to hear Katchafire play this song because they started out as a Bob Marley tribute band.

This was a great concert, and this is my message to you(-u-u): you can't go wrong with live reggae music.
