Show Reviews: Stars

As soon as Stars took the stage, I felt like I was being transported back to high school. And with every song I belted the words to, I couldn't help but smile. It is always a pleasure to see one of your favorite bands live, especially when the band has done so much to shape your life and your music taste. Torquil Campbell echoed this sentiment when he said, "I never thought that our story would become apart of yours..." (or something along those lines) towards the end of their set. It's also a rare treat when a band sounds better live than they do recorded--especially when you have voices are unique as Torquil and Amy Millan. The biggest surprise? The band is old...much older than I would have ever guessed (their first record, "Nightsongs", was released in 2001....crazy). Well, I guess I shouldn't have been so surprised, these Canadians were one of the pioneers of indie. Or something epic like that. While the band was full of energy the entire night, I could have done without Torquil's long, emotional monolouges. Keep it to your lyrics man, no one wants to hear that when they are jamming. On that note, please stick to playing your old songs. With a few exceptions, the band's latest effort, "The North," is subpar. Although this in itself is disappointing, the show overall was one to remember. Let the nostalgia ensue.
