Virtual Boy--Symphony No. None
Latest Release from LA's Alpha Pup Records. This duo is also the latest in a string of successful beat maestros to emerge from The Low End Theory. Unlike other note-worthy graduates, though, the two members of virtual boy are both classically trained. So the music ends up a very unusual mix of classical sweep and electro beat. There are moments when it sounds like a film score, but the subdued string arpeggios so standard in film music morph into kaleidoscopic pulses and face-melting bass. I would call them a cross between Philip Glass and Flying Lotus.
From Pop and Hiss the LA Times Music Blog, "Henry Allen and Preston Walker craft a sort of extraterrestrial church music for androids or Andrew Lloyd Webber rendered weird and funky enough for underground ears."
