REVIEW: Suki Waterhouse 2/11/23
An actress, model, and most recently a performer, Suki Waterhouse is truly the definition of a triple threat. Being the actress from “Love, Rosie” and Robert Pattinson’s current girlfriend, there was already an iconic and mysterious aura around Waterhouse for those of Gen Z, so I was excited to see if she would live up to that while performing in one of Hollywood’s most iconic venues.
There was a huge line snaking around the block of the Fonda, and after waiting for about half an hour I got into the room, which had a chatty but calm vibe. The show began with Blondshell, who had a solid set consisting of mainly indie-pop sounds. She and her band had a very LA-esque energy which was confirmed when she stated that they are all “LA girlies," and she had a laid-back and fun commentary that I found to be reminiscent of Portia’s character in The White Lotus Season 2.
Finally, after ample anticipation, Suki Waterhouse came onstage with a warm welcome from the audience. She had on a glittery outfit with a big jacket that she used almost as a prop throughout her set. Starting strong with her song “Bullshit on the Internet” I already saw nearly the entire audience singing along which gave me a feel for the intensity of her fanbase. Most of the songs that followed were slower and dreamy, which helped display how strong of a singer she really is. There was a fan blowing her hair back from below the stage which could have easily come off as cheesy, but it only added to the cool and chic 70s vibe that Waterhouse has perfected throughout her tour, LA being her last city.
The excitement punched through on songs like “Neon Signs” and “Johanna” which had the crowd dancing and cheering. I was amazed by her mesmerizing stage presence coupled with her humble commentaries where she exclaimed how grateful she was to be on her own tour. At one point, the band along with Waterhouse left the stage, and as the audience called them back for an encore it was with minimal urgency since we all knew she hadn’t yet played her biggest song, “Good Looking”. Luckily, she came back with a slower song called “Blessed” followed by the final song “Good Looking” to which everyone seemed to know the exact lyrics to.
Waterhouse’s true star power rests in her stage presence which comes through with immense ease, most likely due to her experience as an actress and model. Luckily, her vocals as well as the band were able to keep up and put on a seamless and enchanting show.
