SHOW REVIEW: Remi Wolf @ The Greek
Remi Wolf is a USC alum, a vocal powerhouse, and a freaky, little weirdo.
On October 16, Wolf headlined a sold-out show at the Greek Theatre in Los Feliz. Wolf, being from Palo Alto, lovingly called it a hometown show.
“Have a splendid night full of wonder, leisure, and pleasure,” Wolf purred into the mic before starting her show. And we did.
The theater’s energy was electric. It was my first time at The Greek, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Every audience member was dressed in colorful, casual clothes, fun patterns, and beautifully queer outfits – a style that perfectly embodies Wolf’s aesthetic.
The show’s opener was slimdan. My best friend and companion for the night said he had “theater kid” energy. Regardless, his set was amazing. His songs were existential and romantic, while still keeping the audience engaged and dancing. Most of them had a heavy trumpet feature, something you’ll never catch me complaining about. It was a tight, enjoyable 30 minutes that really set the tone for the rest of the night.
After slimdan’s set and a few minutes of rearranging, Wolf strutted out from backstage to a crowd chanting her name. She started off the night by doing exercises with us, loosening our bodies (especially our hips) for a night of dancing.
Wolf’s music is a mix of funk, soul, prog-rock, dance-pop, and disco. She’s essentially genreless, but her songs willalways have you screaming or dancing.
Fun anecdotes were peppered in between songs, showing off Wolf’s infectious personality. Her longest was before “Alone in Miami,” one of my favorites from the album. She went on about her cocaine use, crazy Playboy parties, and “sexcapades.” An insane couple of days that inspired one of her most existential songs on the album.
When she wasn’t talking, she was singing, and oh boy, can she SING. Be it runs, belts, riffs, or growls, Wolf has unmatched vocal talent that she can play around with to make any song her own. Her performance of “Liz,” an older song of hers and one of my favorite songs ever, was one of the best vocal performances I’ve ever seen live. She made an already vocally challenging song, a beast she had conquered.
Halfway through the night, Wolf and her band improvised a song off the word “smooch” from an audience member. Itreally showed her musical prowess as she followed along with chord progressions and melodies on the fly.
My favorite song off the album was “Soup,” and her performance of it supported my opinion. Her songwriting is random while still being heartfelt. She writes about love like it’s the scariest, most beautiful thing in the world. I can imagine screaming the lyrics with my soulmate, and the crowd was screaming them right at Wolf. Maybe we all found a soulmate for the night.
Wolf is built for stardom. She is brimming with talent and passion that many have but pairs it with an energy that few can match. The audience was easily won over, and my best friend (who had barely heard of her before this) is still blasting “Soup” two weeks later.
TL;DR Remi Wolf 4 Life. I’m getting tickets to her Milwaukee show in April.
Always and forever,
