SHOW REVIEW: Peeling Flesh @ 1720 Warehouse
SOS Booking’s all-out, B.S.D.M festival, serving as Peeling Flesh’s Los Angeles stop on their current tour, demonstrated every bit of violence, chaos, and fun that you could expect from a genre and band with those names. The night started with an up-and-coming band, First Degree. They were followed by IE locals, Smoked909, the Bay Area’s Slime, Two Piece from Florida, and the so-southern and so-dreadful Corpse Pile, from Houston. Headlining the night were the two prime bands of the Slam genre currently, PeelingFlesh and Snuffed On Sight.
Every single one of these bands had raging moshpits full of karate moves, rapid two-stepping, crowd-killing, and stage-diving that could have easily killed someone if a foot went too momentous into a face. One notable moment included a middle-aged man getting promptly drop-kicked by the Two Piece drummer after being pervasive towards young women in the crowd. Typical hardcore “justice” style.
One important element of this scene is merchandise and the repping of bands, which was not lacking at this show. Lines for Snuffed On Sight merch consistently went out of the venue during the show, resulting in sold-out sizes and designs. A particularly insightful design (that I purchased) was a Peeling Flesh tour shirt for their new album, “The G Code”, aptly named for its numerous samples of Memphis rap vocals and black culture quotes. On this shirt lies a beautiful myriad of low riders, styrofoam cups full of [redacted], and promethazine scripts that look straight off a picture at a pharmacy. When combined with the unintelligible band logos on the front and back, the perfect imagery of a gangster/demon salad comes to fruition.
Peeling Flesh’s Los Angeles show, like their name, genre, and t-shirt designs, was intense and one to remember.
