BS: A Stumble Into Still Woozy's Trippy New Single

KXSC DJs Saul Singleton and Ariella Shamir were invited to join 1824 for a press conference with Still Woozy to discuss his new single, “BS”. On the song, Sven Gamsky’s voice guides us seamlessly through a trippy wonderland: “I think I broke my brain”, “I got a million voices inside my head”, he chants. These lyrics, along with other lines dealing with isolation and feelings of despair, evoke a distorted, nostalgic feeling that is infectious and entertaining at the same time, and after adding distorted effects and voices throughout the track, this song feels like an instant classic. In a year from now, we’ll all know the words by heart.

Last Tuesday, 1824 gave us the honor to listen to Still Woozy’s new single “BS” before it was released worldwide, as well as an opportunity to join a press conference with the artist himself to answer a few questions live.

It is apparent from this single that Still Woozy is elevating and taking charge when it comes to a bedroom studio and creating a distinct sound. Sven is one of the only people that can craft and perfect the “nostalgic trippy warble aesthetic” that so many bedroom pop singers fail to accomplish. The echo and distortion that helps create this psychedelic mood are just reinforced and echoed in the visuals of his album covers, singles, and music.

Asked if he could multitask, Sven answered “No”. This is something asserted in his music, as most of it relates to taking a pause or not being able to focus; that characteristic feeling of restlessness is also evident in “BS”, and is inevitably what draws listeners in.

Calling himself a “perfectionist”, Still Woozy creates what he claims to be the ultimate “headphone experience”. This notion clearly manifests itself through the intricate layering of funky beats with soothing instrumentals and smooth vocals. The dreamy, happy vibes that result from this “headphone experience” are somewhat in contrast with the lyrical message behind “BS” specifically, which expresses feelings of love and longing. Like the musical layering behind the song, Still Woozy is able to create layers of emotion through thoughtful text, over psychedelic bedroom pop. Together these ingredients make for the perfect “walking-down-the-street-with-my-headphones-in” aesthetic that Gamsky himself aims for. It is a song that bridges genres and appeals to everyone, providing a deep sense of nostalgia along with the excitement of new sounds, all at once.

With the release of “BS”, Still Woozy created another bedroom pop hit with his signature layered, psychedelic sounds that are both melancholic and warm. As he becomes a canonical name within the modern music library, we can only wonder what will come out next. Maybe an album?

BS is out now on all streaming platforms.
