In the current landscape of singles and Tik-Tok hits, predicting an artist’s longevity is harder to predict than ever. However, after paving his own lane in hip-hop for over a decade, K Camp is an artist that has stood the test of time. In celebration of his new album Kiss 5, I got the chance to hear about K Camp’s take on longevity in music, his creative process, and what it takes to make a real song.

Kiss 5, with the deluxe version boasting 20 songs and running just under an hour, is K Camp’s 5th installment of his long running K.I.S.S. album series. The record features the likes of R&B contemporaries Ari Lennox, 6lack, and Jacquees. During the press conference, K Camp states that the easiest way to make a real song is to spit some real sh*t, and that’s what he did. Despite coordinating features over email, K Camp was particularly pleased with how everyone’s features came out, stating that everyone did the project justice.

As the latest K.I.S.S. installment, K Camp remarked that this project focuses on the smooth, melodic cadences of early hits such as Comfortable and Money Baby. This vibe that can be caught throughout the album is what K Camp describes as for the ladies. It was very clear that in the wake of Lottery/Renegade’s viral success, K Camp wanted a project that resonated with new fans that may be familiar with some of his earlier hits.

After attending the press conference, I arrived at the conclusion that K Camp deserves a biopic for how he treats his music career as his enterprise. Coming a long way from XXL’s 2015 Freshman Class, K Camp has consistently released quality projects with hits across the board that have become cult classics and viral dance songs alike. When asked about how he keeps it all running, K Camp emphasizes how easy it is to lose momentum, and that falling off is inevitable without a solid work ethic. While some speculate whether or not K Camp is seeing his full potential, K Camp pays no mind as he continues to rebuild his momentum and tap into a new audience from the most viral TikTok dance trend of the year. TikTok or real hip-hop, K Camp has proven his versatility and consistency for over a decade like a lone maverick, rejecting trends and only releasing what is real to him.
