Last weekend saw the highly anticipated return of DVS1 and Nick Höppner to Los Angeles for Prime, thanks to the collaboration of promoters Droid Behavior and Prototype.

Lot 613 opened at 10pm for the thirty-eighth edition of Prototype, a showcase of international and domestic dance music in the arts district of downtown Los Angeles. As one of the only electronic music parties regularly occurring in an official venue in the city, it’s no surprise that Prototype often books the biggest and best of underground dance music at their shows. Previous Prototype parties from just this past year have featured Ben Klock, Robert Hood, and Henrik Schwarz just to name a few highlights.

As excited as I was to see the artists coming out that night, I’ve become very cynical when it comes to most dance music events in Los Angeles. Illegal warehouse parties often have sub-par sound systems and events tend to end too early due to a lack of permits. Happily for me, upon entering the venue the ambiance was better than I’d ever seen at the Lot before. The wise decision had been made to close the large outdoor patio, leaving only the second smaller outdoor space for loitering and consequently forcing the majority of the attendees inside and onto the dance floor. Larger than life visuals by Oktaform enveloped the selectors as they seamlessly mixed room-filling tracks for an enthusiastic crowd. While much of the success of a party lies in the hands of the DJ’s with the way they decide to shape the feeling of a night with their selections, I give great credit to Droid Behavior and Prototype for creating a space that feels especially intimate for such a large venue. If you are huge fan of house and techno or just looking for a night of escapism in Los Angeles, I could not recommend a Prime party more.
