Festival Review: 2016 Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival
After a week of anguish as a result of the presidential election, Camp Flog Gnaw was the perfect pick me up. The festival had something for everyone, from upbeat music like Taco to something more mellow like Gallant. Some acts that stood out include Anderson .Paak, Kaytranada, Chance the Rapper, and Erykah Badu. These artists’ songs are great for dancing and having a relaxing time without thinking too much about what you’re listening to.
Exposition Park is one of my favorite venues, so seeing it set up like a carnival was impressive. There were two main stages and rides throughout the park. There was even mini golf, where Tyler, the Creator was hanging out. The food was also amazing including refreshing aguas frescas and a vegan food truck.
Kaytranada started off his set by encouraging the audience to dance, and although we were shy at first, we eventually all complied. He brought out Anderson .Paak for his song GLOWED UP, and it was unforgettable. The crowd was small, due to the fact that Lil Wayne was on at the same time, but everyone was dancing and vibing with the music.
Anderson .Paak, another personal favorite, had a great stage presence and was really grabbing the attention of the crowd. His energy on stage put a smile on my face and got everyone really hyped. Most of his set consisted of him playing the drums, which is a really unique twist to hip- hop.
People were going hard at Camp Flog Gnaw. I went to the festival in the hopes of immersing myself in the music and culture, and it definitely did the trick.
