M83: Show Review

M83 has been one of my favorite bands since their hit album Hurry up, We’re Dreaming released in 2011. If you listened to the radio or went anywhere that year, you probably heard "Midnight City."  More recently, M83 has put out Junk  which is one of my favorites of 2016.

I was super excited when I saw M83's show being advertised at The Greek Theatre. I had seen M83 for only a few minutes at Coachella this past year and was upset that my friends didn’t want to stay for the entire show.

So I drove through the hills of Los Angeles to arrive at the Greek Theatre. I had never been there before and at first sight, I knew that it was going to be a great venue with a beautiful atmosphere.

M83 graced the stage right on time, the five band members all had a unique look and calm collected expressions on their faces. The band is led by singer Anthony Gonzales, whose booming and melodic voice echoed throughout the atmospheric venue the entire night. Something that I love about M83 is their unique mix of instruments, although their music can sound simple there are a lot of different layers that make up the songs. Nearly all of their songs M83 played that night featured a saxophone, various synthesizers, electronic flutes, and double-neck guitars. M83 played a lot of my favorite album, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” as well as about half of their new album. They had spectacular lighting throughout the entire set that complimented the music perfectly. It was constantly setting an aurora that would set an outline of the different band members that made them appear as floating figures holding various instruments. I can't think of any better way to describe the music and lighting of M83 that night other than beautiful. “Midnight City” was played towards the last third of the show and it brought the crowd to a peak of dance and excitement.

M83 brought great energy on stage that carried throughout their music as well. Their beautiful mesh of instruments and epic build-ups were truly spectacular to see played live.
