Igor Stravinsky- Firebird

Something a bit different... we haven't covered too much classical music on this blog, so here's something to get into.  I'm only posting a few songs, but get a hold of the entire piece if you can.  Quite beautiful. Infernal Dance of All Kastchei's Subjects Disappearance of Kastchei's Palace and Magical Creations go buy this

Nick Drake- Pink Moon

Stripped down folk music.  Really sad.  Really beautiful.  Really good.  Pretty much perfect.  Most people have probably heard this, but if you haven't, be sure to check it out. Pink Moon Parasite Or buy it. Disclaimer: same as always

Melvins- Houdini

I just started getting into this rather prolific band.  If you haven't heard of them, Melvins are a four-piece grunge/sludge act from Washington (no surprise there).  They've been jamming since the late 80s and are still releasing new material. They cite Black Flag, Black Sabbath, Swans, and Flipper as influences, but they really have a pretty unique sound that can't really be fully defined.  Bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden worshiped them.  It's safe to say that Melvins had a strong influence on the whole grunge scene. For this particular album, Cobain helped produce several tracks and even played some instruments on some of them.  This is Melvins supposedly at their most accessible.  That being said, it's still pretty strange. Hooch Night Goat Buy it Disclaimer: You know the deal.

T. Rex- Electric Warrior

A classic Marc Bolan album.  Expect glam rock/psychedelic pop or whatever you want to call it mixed with some lush melodies and smooth vocals. If you're a Bowie fan you'll probably dig this. It really is too good.  Give it a listen: Mambo Sun Bang A Gong Better yet, buy it Disclaimer: same as always.  bands, email us at publications@kscr.org if you don't wish to have your material posted here

Boards of Canada- Geogaddi

This stuff is too chill. Darker and a bit more foreboding than their other stuff, but still beautiful.  The record also clocks in at 66:06.  Coincidence?  Regardless, best study music. Srsly. Julie and Candy The Devil is in the Details Buy it Disclaimer: same as last time

Swans- The Great Annihilator

Swans used to play really harsh and noisy industrial music.  The kind that made you want to jam a knife in your ear because it was so brutal and aggressive.  And then they pulled a 180 and started playing experimental post-punk kind of stuff.  The stuff I posted here, is of the latter.  But all that aggression and nastiness... it's still there, albeit a bit more subtle and subdued.  This album in particular is pretty tame compared to some of their other stuff, and if you dig this, make an effort to check out the rest of their discography.  One last piece of news: they recently reformed and are due for a new album this year! I am the sun the great annihilator Buy it Disclaimer: same as always.  if the artist doesn't wish to have his work posted here, shoot us an email at publications@kscr.org

Pixies- Trompe Le Monde

The last Pixies album before the subsequent breakup and often the most overlooked.  It gets a lot of slack, for being more linear, more generic rockish, and lacking Kim Deal.  While these may be true,  nothing changes the fact that this record is pretty awesome.  It's no "Surfer Rosa" or "Doolittle", but c'mon, it's the still the fucking Pixies. Even at their "worst", their putting out some really solid if not some of their best material. Get on this. Alec Eiffel Bird Dreams of the Olympus Mons Or buy it. Disclaimer: Same as last time

Danger- 09/14 2007

Electronica/house.  Described as being like Justice but a bit darker.  This is a fairly new act that you should probably start digging... 11H30 14h54 I'm not sure where you can buy this, but be sure to check out his website for the latest news.

Outkast- ATLiens

Before Outkast got big and released hits like "Aquemini" and "Stankonia", they dropped this gem of an album.  "ATLiens" has been my jam for the past few weeks now.  It's a great album, featuring top notch rapping and dope jazzy beats.  The first five or six songs are perfect, but really the entire album is awesome.  Do yourself a favor and give it a listen. ATLiens 13th Floor Buy this shit.  You'll be glad you did. Disclaimer: if the artist does not wish to have his work posted on this site, email us at publications@kscr.org and we'll be sure to take it down.

Electric Wizard- Dopethrone

I apologize for the rather long delay.  It's been a while since anything has been uploaded... To kick things off, here's stoner/doom metal band, Electric Wizard. This is probably their most acclaimed album.  Expect heavy riffage and tons of Black Sabbath worship.  The vocals could probably be better, but it's not that big of a deal.  What it lacks in the vocals department, it makes up with sheer noise and heaviness.  Best listened to with a nice pair of headphones or speakers, and probably after smoking a joint.  This is stoner metal after all. I, the Witchfinder Vinum Sabbathi Enjoooooooooy. Or better yet... buy it

The Dirty Projectors- Rise Above

Interesting concept album... an attempt to recreate Black Flag's famous album, Damaged.  As a Black Flag fan, I had to check it out.  It's not quite exactly what I was expecting, but that doesn't mean it isn't good.  Just different.  Way different (and that's probably because I don't even listen to the Dirty Projectors).  Anyways, this stuff is pretty mellow and the vocals are nice unlike the usual Black Flagish stuff. What I See Rise Above   Buy it. Disclaimer: Hasn't changed.

Boris- Heavy Rocks

The Japanese cult favorites.... this is some pretty solid 60s/70s influenced stoner rock.  You really should check out their discography even if you don't dig this.  They cover a wide variety of genres including drone/punk/sludge/noise/experimental/psychedelic/ambient/etc.  Really fantastic band.  Get on this! Korosu Better yet... buy it... on ebay.  It looks like the album is sort of hard to get a hold of at the moment Disclaimer: The same as always
