New Punk Adds: CODA & 23 Skunks

CODA - EP: Kind of reminds of older SoCal punk bands. There are a lot of straight punk songs on this album, but there are also a lot of slower songs with cleaner guitar tones that are also highlights. The last track in particular almost sounds like post-grunge to me, like a lo-fi Marcy's Playground. Worth giving a listen if you like SoCal punk, 90's rock or low-fi music in general. JACK

23 Skunks - 23 Skunks EP: 23 Skunks (ska + punk = skunk, get it?) is a band that you could call ska punk, but if you're expecting to hear a band that sounds like Sublime or Op Ivy... that's not going to happen. This band alternates throughout the album between ska punk (tracks 2 and 6) and really heavy, shouty hardcore burners (3-5), a lot of time on the same track. This is almost perfectly exemplified on the first track, which morphs from a slower ska punk track to a wild hardcore number over the course of its minute-thirty running time. This kind of rapid shifts in tempo and especially vocal style (mainly between shouting and screaming) within these songs is the most notable sonic trait of this band. Other than that, it's pretty straightforward, moshable punk. JACK
